Police Pay Tribute To ‘Popular’ Officer Found ‘Murdered’ In Beauty Spot Lake

Greater Manchester Police officers have paid tribute to a ‘popular and adored’ policewoman who was found dead in a lake yesterday morning.

The body of Leanne McKie, 39, a serving officer with the force, was found at Poynton Lake in Cheshire at around 3.45am.

Cheshire Police launched a murder investigation after being called to the beauty spot after reports of a body had been found.

A 43-year-old man from Wilmslow has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being held in police custody.

Speaking this afternoon, Chief Constable Ian Hopkins of Greater Manchester Police paid tribute to the mum of three.

He said: ‘It is with great sadness that I can confirm that the body of serving GMP officer Leanne McKie was found in Poynton yesterday morning and a murder investigation has been launched by Cheshire Police.

‘I would like to offer my most sincere condolences to Leanne’s family and friends at this devastating time.

‘My heart particularly goes out to her three young children, who she adored.

‘Leanne has served with Greater Manchester Police since 2001 and is a Detective working Serious Sexual Offences Unit.

‘Leanne worked tirelessly to provide support and seek justice for victims of sexual crimes.

‘She was a popular figure among her colleagues, who have been left devastated by the news of her tragic death. She will be sorely missed by everyone she worked with.’

Ms McKie leaves behind three young children; two little girls and a boy.

Anyone with information is asked to call Cheshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 93 of September 29, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
