Teens Rescued From Capsized Catamaran in Australia

Four teenagers were saved from an overturned catamaran in Moreton Bay, Queensland, on the afternoon of March 11. The teens were not wearing lifejackets, police said.

The boat capsized due to a strong gust of wind, according to a police statement.

In the footage, the teens can be seen standing on the hull of their overturned 33 foot, clinging on for their lives without any safety gear.

According to Newscorp, one of the teens sent a text message to a friend, who warned police about their situation.

Police said the teenagers were rescued at 2:15 p.m. after receiving word of their difficulty at 1:30 p.m.

Water police have provided a few basic safety tips to make sure boaties stay safe out in the water:

    • Always wear a personal flotation device, even if you are an experienced boaty;
      • Advise someone where you are going and when you plan to return;
      • Check the weather conditions carefully before you leave; and
      • Plan for the worst-case scenario and confirm that all your safety equipment is in good order and has been tested.
